Replacing a combi boiler in Bristol
Combi boilers are the most common choice in Bristol's terraces and flats. If yours is getting old or unreliable, here is what to think about before you replace it.
A combi boiler heats your radiators and gives you hot water on demand, with no hot water cylinder or loft tanks. That makes it a good fit for the two and three bedroom Victorian and Edwardian terraces found across Bishopston, Southville, Easton and Totterdown, and for the many Bristol flats where space is tight.
Is a combi still right for your home?
A combi works best when only one or two hot taps or showers are used at once. If your household has grown, or you have added a second bathroom in a loft conversion, a system boiler with a cylinder may now suit you better. It is worth asking this before you replace like for like.
Water pressure matters
Combis take water straight from the mains, so shower performance depends on your incoming water pressure and flow. Some older Bristol streets have narrow or ageing supply pipes. A quick flow test during a survey tells you what to expect.
Boiler position and flue
In many terraces the boiler sits in the kitchen with the flue on the back wall. Keeping it in the same place is usually the simplest option. Moving it, for example into a loft or a cupboard, is possible but adds pipework and flue work. Flue terminals also have to meet clearance rules around windows, doors and boundaries, which can be tricky in narrow back yards.
Cleaning the system
Older radiators and pipework collect sludge over time. Fitting a new boiler into a dirty system can shorten its life and may affect the manufacturer's warranty. A system clean and a magnetic filter are commonly recommended with a new boiler.
Controls
In England, there are rules about the heating controls that must be fitted with a new gas boiler. Your installer will explain which options meet them. Good controls also make it easier to heat your home only when you need to.
Paperwork after installation
Gas boiler installations must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, who will notify the work so you receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Keep this with the manufacturer's warranty documents, as you may need it when you sell the house.
